Mental health cops help reweave social safety net In San Antonio
October 03, 2014
The San Antonio police department includes a “mental health squad” of specially trained officers whose basic understanding and skills can often de-escalate a tense situation. This program is just one component of an innovative, county-wide system that some consider a model for the country. Instead of either jail or a mental hospital, people who are apprehended for minor infractions can now be admitted to the Restoration Center, a new facility with a 48-hour inpatient psychiatric unit, a detox center, and a full range of outpatient services from primary care to substance abuse recovery programs. The center also helps mentally ill patients find housing and job training. Several independent agencies pooled resources to launch the Restoration Center, and officials say the financial efficiency created by the system’s coordinated approach has so far saved the city $50 million over five years.
