Through a SAMHSA-funded, campus-wide initiative called Project Lifeline, the University of Arizona (UA) has created a suicide prevention program with many different elements. Since its launch in 2011, Project Lifeline has trained more than 4,100 students and staff members with the Question, Persuade, Refer gatekeeper curriculum. The university offers psychological counseling and psychiatric services to students and employees. Awareness efforts include a “Stressbusters” team of student volunteers. This September, UA launched PreventSuicide.arizona.edu, offering a range of online resources to the university community. A team of students and faculty members is now developing a pilot set of modules and videos to help instructors introduce suicide prevention discussions in their classrooms, drawing on their specific academic subjects.
