Substance Abuse Treatment
Settings that provide treatment for substance use disorders have an important role to play in suicide prevention. Guidelines for addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors in substance abuse treatment are available from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Actions to consider include:
- Routinely screening for suicide risk
- Preparing a treatment plan to address suicidality
- Ensuring continuity of care through ongoing coordination with other providers, family members, and community resources, as appropriate
