The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has released a report on using coded data from the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) to identify cases of nonfatal suicide attempts and intentional self-harm. It was authored by leaders from CDC, NCHS, and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) serving on the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s (Action Alliance) Data and Surveillance Task Force. The report aims to help injury research and practice make the transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM to improve surveillance of injuries and poisonings resulting from nonfatal suicidal behavior.
