CANADA: New Suicide Prevention Project Targets High-Risk Nunavut Residents
September 21, 2018
A new project aims to prevent repeat suicide attempts in Canada’s Nunavut territory. The project will provide follow-up contacts to people who have visited a health care facility for a suicide attempt. Over a period of months, participants will receive access to mental health services and community-based resources. Based in Nunavut’s Baffin region, the project will consist of a one-year pilot test, followed by a 30-month scale-up and six-month evaluation. Similar projects have been successful in other locations, according to principal investigator Brian Mishara, director of the Centre for Research and Intervention on Suicide, Ethical Issues, and End-of-Life Practices at the University of Quebec in Montreal. Funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the project is a collaboration between university researchers, the Nunavut Department of Health, and the Embrace Life Council.
