COLORADO: Mental Health Training Mandatory for Colorado Coaches

Starting this fall, Colorado high school coaches must receive training in student mental health. The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) issued the rule, which requires all coaches to register for mental health training in order to participate in the upcoming sports season. Coaches can take a district-led mental health training or a course offered by the National Federation of State High School Associations that covers stress reduction, coping with depression, and suicide prevention. “CHSAA’s vision is to deconstruct the stereotypes around mental health and help start the conversations that need to happen around our kids,” said CHSAA commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green. “The mental and physical well-being of our student participants is our priority.”
