A new effort is working to integrate mental health supports in Black faith communities. Launched in August, Soul Shop for Black Churches offers one-day workshops for faith leaders in how to identify and assist people who are struggling. The workshops encourage leaders to foster more open discussion about suicide and mental health in their congregations. According to Director Victor Armstrong, the purpose is to create “soul safe” communities where members are comfortable opening up when they are in emotional pain. Experts say faith leaders are in an ideal position to normalize conversations about mental health, provide culturally sensitive outreach, and reduce stigma against seeking professional help.
