Adults

Every year, thousands of U.S. adults die by suicide (see Scope of the Problem section), and many more struggle with suicidal thoughts or behaviors or experience other mental health problems. Adults encompass many different subgroups in terms of age, sex, race/ethnicity, occupation, and other characteristics. Suicide prevention efforts should seek to identify and address the risk and protective factors that are most relevant to each targeted group (e.g., men in the middle years, college students).
